Is this behavior needy?
Whenever I talk to a woman (over text, IM, FB. Not in person), if there is a break in the conversation from her side for example if she doesn't reply for around 10 - 15 minutes, I send out something like 'U there'. This usually gets a response from them. But I wanted to know if this behavior was needy.
Also as a background, I never talk to them every time. If the conversation is good I usually wait for a day and then again initiate the conversation . If the conversation is not so good like if there is a break in the conversation from her side, I usually wait many days before initiating. So in the sense of initiating a conversation , I'm not needy. I have it well calibrated depending on the response I have got. Also I can engage even a very cold woman very well because of my cocky and funny humor and also on the range of topics on which I can talk and simulate them.
My only concern is my behavior of asking 'U there' when there is a break from her side. Also I do it only once in a particular conversation . I ask them like that so that I want to know whether they are still there else I wont waste any time on it. If she doesn't reply I don't ask her again, until she replies.
Please give your views on whether I should change it.

If you have to ask if it's needy, it's needy. It basically shows you were sitting there for 10-15 mins waiting for her to respond. If the conversation comes to a natural end, just move on and do something different. You can contact her in a while with another topic and see if she responds.

Asking if she's there says "Hi, I have nothing better to do than to wait for a response."
If that happens again, rather than say "U there?" Put your phone away and take a 30 minute walk. I do this all the time. 90% of the time, when you come back, she'll have written. If she hasn't you won't care so much.

Yes, sometimes you need to just put the phone. I must admit I fall victim to doing needy things if I'm constantly looking at my phone. Sometimes 10 minutes can feel like an hour.
