Telephone coaching by 5.0 :
I had a touch of apprehension before the call: On the one side Inner Game in London had been like getting a box full of new tools – with some added candies and free drinks. And I knew there was more to get, whatever the topic or angle would be. But on the other side I knew that other in the advisory business – the ones you may ask for advice if your parents never cease inventing new ways to psyche you out for example – have a pride in starting from scratch, being inefficient, disagree and being offended by preparations…
5.0 may have a rate twice as high, but it’s ten times more efficient. By a second thought; it may be multiplied again. There is no wasted time asking where a notion or inefficient thought pattern comes from. (And no synapses that should be allowed to die are woken back to life.) There are some poignant “eh… How do you (really) think???” And then the mallet comes out and hammer in a new insight or thought pattern that is literally spinning its way into the brain in a constructive way as one is falling asleep later in the evening. Sometimes it’s almost like a tiny screw driver into the brain; “This needs an adjustment, ..some tuning here. And this one is mounted completely the wrong way around!!” Or it’s like clearing room for a handful of slots with new skills or understanding for myself to find and slot in. ….as Kino .
I didn’t get the feeling that the consultation was like a slow train coming. It was more like a freight train that didn’t even stop to pick me up. I just had to get a grip and cling to the train: “And the first question is?” – It’s quite like the style I use myself when mentoring in sports. Keeping thing in movement, don’t loosing momentum, keep her mentally busy… And then she looks back and says: “Did I ski THAT!” – The list of questions 5.0 had asked me to prepare was useful. When awkward moments threatened, it was just to scour the list for a new topic. A small question could release an avalanche of useful stuff and insight. Even when I didn’t get answers on exactly what I asked for – or if there some minor misunderstanding – the answer usually applied to another question I had asked myself, or I could file it away to be easily retrieved if the situation should arise. And the situations was easy to imagine and very to the point. Just to describe IOI in the terms of sitting in a gay bar and absolutely not being interested… I think I made some grimaces while an observing thought struck me: “This is too good to be true..”
The day after, I applied some of what 5.0 had kicked my legs into doing, at a busy board meeting in a club. No fuses in my brain blew, and no women pulled back. It was more “Oh, isn’t nice, it’s mother of pearl”. The thing isn’t whether one has done kino before, but by not having any mental tools around it, it’s been so close to clumsy – and with too much thinking – that it has gone from not-too-bad to deep-downwards. “It’s not about what you done, but to make it a part of you” as 5.0 said regarding things I had done right, but not as a solid, natural part of me.
Value for money. And I chose the word ‘coaching’, as that was what it felt like…
