I was seriously considering writing a series of blogs on this but it's a little too fluffy. I studied writing and English in school and have watched this movie like 25 times so I've dug a lot up on it.

    2 themes:

    1) Going out as fighting metaphor (for PU guys): The guys in the movie go out to fight each weekend, get their asses kicked and come back stronger. They embrace the ass kicking (rejection) as something that makes them stronger in other parts of life. The narrator (Edward Norton) slowly morphes into his best self (Tyler Durden). "Sometimes I let Tyler do the talking." Eventually, he comes full circle and balances out where he is a centred guy and doesn't have to pretend to be Tyler. He is his best self and leaves the fight club behind a stronger man.

    2) Society wants you to fit a certain mold, fight consumerism, raw raw: Definitely a political view you'd find in a university English class. It says that you should reject what you've been taught and how a lot what we do is running in hamster wheel after superficial stuff we don't need. Finding a passion/purpose that challenges you to think differently and create your own concept of the world will have you playing in your own world, not society's and you'll come out your own man/person for it.

The fighting is the metaphor for that challenges that alters your self image.

Ok i see where the connection is now but Nick id seriously be interested in reading up on that blog you haven't made yet, i must have watched it over 10 times and everytime i seem to uncover something i missed in the previous viewings, i think the reason i like this film so much is because of how complex it is and mist people i have told to watch the film dont seem to see it in the same way i do.

Have you all notice the split second clippings of tyler in edward nortons life before he actually meets him on the plane?

Anymore elaborations and opinions on the subject are very welcome as i have love for this film!

Ya, that's symbollism of flashes of Tyler starting show through in the narrators actions. Kind of like that little voice that says "Fuck it, go approach her" when you get AA. If more guys are interested I may write something up.

It's because fighting is the sister of approaching, it's confrontation and it's manly instinct.

Just as you've imagine yourself start a fight with a guy who looked 10 times tougher than you because he dissed you (You've imagined approaching the hottest woman in the club and picking her up) but when it comes to the real thing you got too scared to do it (just as you got too nervous to approach her) You've also continued this fantasy to the point where you successfully owned the guy (and the other fantasy until you've successfully charmed the girl)

today's society is full of people that act tough and hit the gym (yet have never had the balls to stand up and start a fight) and good looking guys who get a haircut weekly and keep up with fashion (yet have never even approached a woman)

Also shows how good it feels even when you do get beaten and don't come out successful, you feel like a badass because you even tried.

If you substitute everything you saw in the movie for a pickup movie, it would still make perfect sense, from the underground club fighting (picking up) to the initiating a fight during the day on the street (approaching a woman)

    P.S: Go ahead Nick.

I have only seen the movie once when it came out forever ago and the first thing that came to mind when thinking about it is: Rule 1. Don't talk about fight club.
It is definitely all about inner game. I can't wait to research this.
Thanks to the OP and all comments.

Would be interested to know where you stand on this. I get the impression that a lot of LS instructors are aiming for money, status, power and material possesions.

Damn right, but what you don't see is that a lot are entrepreneurs, and love the lifestyle and are just trying to enhance that. (Half of our instructors, the juniors, don't actually make money at LS--they just volunteer on bootcamps--there are even a couple who use it as a way to give back.)

For me, for instance, I get to live in another country, travel the world AND make money while doing it. It affords me opportunities to do the things I love, rather than working for a corporation that I don't believe in (big theme in the movie), just so I can say I drive a fancy car because the fancy car is pictured as a status symbol in a magazine. There is nothing wrong with money. The idea that money is evil is a scarcity mentality. (Example: Warren Buffett LOVES investing and makes zillions at it, but he's lived in the same 3 bedroom house for 50 years.)

As an example, I work hard so I can be writing this on a 27-inch screen, but it's not an Apple screen just so I can say I have Apple. It's a 27-inch screen that is functional and does exactly what I need. It'd be nice to have an Apple screen to match my Apple laptop--which I bought because my PC one kept crashing--but why would I spend 75% more to get a fruit emblem with a bite out of it if this one does what I want.

(I think you'd love some of Starlight's stuff on lifestyle design. That's what the LS guys I hang with really want.)
    _________

Aside from that, a lot of the old pickup theory, from what I can deduce, is that there is this idea that you don't need money to get the girls you want, which is true, but it certainly makes it a lot easier, so you have to know why you're doing it. It's like a thing of "we don't need money to pick up girls like rich guys," but what would be wrong with having game AND money. Sounds like a receipe for massive success. You see what I mean?
