Does Taking Birth Control Alter Women's Sexual Choices? : The Primate Diaries

"Over the past decade more than 75% of all studies looking at cycling mate preferences have shown that, during their most fertile period, women prefer more masculine and symmetrical male features and are particularly attracted to men showing dominance and competitiveness. It is during these times in their cycle that women have shown the greatest likelihood of cheating on a partner (what Alvergne and Lummaa refer to as "extra-pair copulations") or engaging in a one-night stand. However, during the infertile parts of their cycle women tend to prefer less masculine faces and are more attracted to males that make better long-term partners and devoted fathers.

    ...

"The trouble with oral contraception, Alvergne and Lummaa suggest, is that by altering the normally cycling hormones women will certainly prevent pregnancy, but they might inadvertently be altering their choice of what qualities they're attracted to."

Cliffnotes: There's a theory that women on birth control pills prefer less masculine men.

What are your thoughts on this?

I personally have no clue because I'm not really advanced in terms of women and pickup, and therefore I don't really have a lot of comparison material.

Where on earth did you get this bullshit from?

As far as I'm concerned I go for the same type of guy birth control or not.
And I'm fairly sure it's the same for all my girlfriends.

Don't trust all the bullshit you read on the internet.
    Most of it is fake.

This is a scientific article published on sciencedirect from the university of Sheffield. Hardly what you can call "random bullshit on the internet". Did you even bother to read it?

I read that women on the pill prefer men whom they stop being all that attracted to when they stop the pill. So, for a relationship, better find a woman when she is not taking it. Then again, you don't really know in the beginning.

I don't need to read the bullshit love.

    I'm a female.
I think I would know what happens to me.

Yes, that's right. Everyone here on the forum knows that there's absolutely no difference between what a woman wants and what she thinks she wants .

If you don't bother to read it then just keep the thread clear for people who actually want to and give a response based on that.

Here's a friendly warning to anyone reading this thread:

Respond to the topic, or don't post -- there's plenty of other things on the Forum to discuss.

I also read somewhere that women in more disease ridden places tend to prefer more masculine men than others. Being more masculine means that the man is healthy enough to produce testosterone which also weakens the immune system. So a masculine man shows he has strong enough immune system to produce masculine traits. It's like the peacock's tail.

However, more masculine men tend to want to spread their seeds to more women and not commit to others, so women may want more feminine men. It's like a trade-off.

For practice, I don't think it matters much.

Also, these studies are done from a limited view of what is masculine vs feminine. Everybody falls in a spectrum between M and F... And different women have different tastes. These statistic give you a general feel of the population, but they don't accurately show what a particular woman will do. Statistics only count for "averages".

I don't see why not, because smell also affects sexual choices.

Estrogen and testosterone can and does affect our moods and decision making. Ever know someone taking estrogen shots? It affects their mood, sometimes in big ways.

But this article makes a good point - before birth control, rugged guys like Bogie, Clark Gable, and Sean Connery were considered hot, and post birth control, the boyish faced types like Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, and Leonardo DiCaprio became more popular. I wouldn't have put Hugh Jackman into the boyish category, but Matt Damon or Christian Bale? Definitely.

Even though birth control was around since The Beatles, and played a big part in the sexual revolution, how sure are we that it hasn't caused other problems....autism? ADHD? Endomitriosis? Irregular periods (which a lot of women take it for... but what if she was put on it at 14-15, isn't it possible her cycle could be affected for life?) If you're a parent, would you want your teenage girl to be on birth control? How much do people actually know about birth control, regardless of the government approving it as safe?

You'll face this question in a relationship where you want to have kids but she's got wacky periods, or if you have a kid/stepkid going into her teens and have a say in the birth control discussion. Usually it's left up to mom and the physician.

This also goes into the world of sexual orientation... pretty complex stuff that most people going through it have a hard time dealing with.

Interesting article but irrelevant until women start wearing signs saying whether or not they're on the pill. Until then, game on as usual.
