Refusing a dance questions

Hey there, i was in a strip club a few days ago. It was really quiet so we just sat arond for the first hour at the bar watching the pole dancers. After a while a HB10 came over and started chatting to me. My intention was to chat for a while and not give in to a lap dance. We chatted for about 20 mins and I bought her a drink and all was going well. I negged her about her fuzzy hair and stuff and I knew that she was not used to that. I refused all her attempts to get me to dance at first by saying that my girlfriend would not like it and all that. I ended up paying her for a single dance and after that she wanted me to go for a further $500 private dance. I refused and I never saw her again the rest of the night.
Now, I know that by getting her to dance for me she then saw me as income. I wish to live and learn from you guys. So here are a few questions.

1. If I want to 'pick-up' a stripper should I always never pay her for a dance.
2. Should I spend the whole time in the club and not get a dance from anyone? (I am thinking that the girls might think I'm odd or gay)
3. What is the best way to refuse a dance from a girl you really wish to pick up?

Gaming a stripper is a long shot under the best of circumstances so you may as well enjoy yourself... Do what YOU want. That said...
First, the don't get a dance thing isn't written in stone... I think it's more about who controls the frame. You should refuse when SHE asks if you want a dance...And as long as you don't get blown out of the set you can keep sarging her, right? So sometime later if you really want one, get one, it just has to be on your terms. Make it more of an "I'm the fucking man. Let's see what you got." thing. Challenge her to show you something. Something you haven't already seen a million times - you are the fucking prize! and you'll get a way better dance BTW. Do not compliment her looks afterwards (or ever) tho - or it's game over... (says Captain Ron Obvious.)
Second, these girls are really in tune with sizing a guy up... They won't think you're gay or odd unless you are. If you have the right frame, you can do whatever you want... (I borrowed that) They will however see right thru an AFC putting on aires... (even an aPUA) Your confidence needs to be genuine or most likely their game will run circles around yours.
Last, the best way to refuse a dance is the same as the best way to refuse anything in set. Playful negging. Like "I don't think so, you seem like kind of a spaz." or "OK, but I charge thirty, so you'll owe me ten." etc.
