This topic has been covered lots of times. Nonetheless, a girl will NEVER ask this question when you are isolated or semi-isolated unless she was seriously interested in you.

I don't think I've ever given a woman a straight answer to that question in my life. I've dated girls for years and never let them know if they were #1 or #301. I think if you answer you'll either look like a male whore or an inexperienced boy. It's a no win situation.

The best thing to do is to joke around. Use a response like cheez, sandman and dead eye gave those are good. Or try:

"i had it written down but I lost the paper it was on"
"are you counting today?"
"wouldn't it be better to just wonder?"

If you're playing dumb, like Truestory said, it looks like you have something to hide. If you do it like "James Bond", and pull it off, she'll get embarrassed (for being nosy) and you'll be able to move forward.

In fact, I've never been asked this question early on--only in deep comfort or in LTR mode.
