What's with the advertising on the sides?

Whats up with adding more ads on this site? You guys already added a featured products panel and now one for sponsors? 1/3 of the vertical screen space is taken up by ads! At least put it at the top so it doesn't cut down the viewing area so much!

It looks ok on my 19 inch LCD monitor.

As you probably know, we are making structural changes to the forums. So, this is work in progress. The 'ads' and 'products toolbar' are here to help members find endorsed products and other useful links.

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions. Keep them coming.

I was going to get rid of the top panel instead of the left hand side one....but maybe that's not the right idea.

Look, I know they're intrusive. I'm not going to pretend it's not. But as TAF keeps growing, it keeps sucking more and more time and bandwidth and at some point, we need to start paying the bills. The alternative is to charge people to use the forums, and no one wants that.

Yeah, I understand - nothing comes without a cost. Its probably just because I'm viewing it on my 15" laptop. But other than that, you guys are doing a great job - by far the best forum out there.

Yes, they are, but they are also an evidence of the great job this forum is doing.
Why ?
Because we are in any case contributing to build and MAINTAIN' the most important forum worldwide.
It' obvious this imply higher costs and then higher advertisments.
So...
As unobvious as it can seem to newbies, I mean that advertisements are a sign of improvement.
Isn't it ?

Now I run with a resolution of 1280x1024 and I am seeing scrollbars with this advertising. You might want to also think of anyone who may be still sticking to good old 1024x768 as well.

Anyway its a great forum so I look forward to seeing what is done when your sorted tweaking

, I know you have your own overheads of bandwidth costs keeping the site up so adverts are understandable to help contribute.

Is advertising on the side more intrusive than advertising on the top? We need to put one panel, but I don't much mind where.

I'd like to see the layout more like this but a little smaller.

That way its the first thing people see when they get to the page (more likely for them to click on) but it doesn't change the viewing area, it just moves it down.
