If you've never lifted before and are under weight it really does not matter how good or bad your diet is. Just eat as much as possible and lift you'll put on mass really fast and fill out well. I've gone from a sleek 6'0 155lbs to 6'0 210 lbs in about 1.5 years of lifting and eating like a pig. Now, I am starting to focus more on my diet, even so I am still at around 13-16% BF, never put on that much fat at all mainly muscle.

If you really want to gain weight fast try drinking a gallon of milk per day its about 2400 calories and no im not saying to drink it all in one sitting but disperse that shit like 16oz breakfast/snack/ etc..and if your lactose intolerant try supplement with lacatase enzyme to help break down the sugars in milk , oh btw the drinking a gallon of milk is as old to bodybuilding as the squats and milk program for putting on size fast heres a quote from Mark Rippetoe Starting Strength book " Milk works because it is easy, it is available, it doesn't need any preparation, and it has all the components necessary for growing mammals, which your trainees most definitely are."

Does anyone have an example high calorie diet that I could follow? I was thinking about going to a nutritionist for this but perhaps someone here will know.

I'm not really interested in bodybuilding but I would like to be the recommended weight for my height with a stronger, toned frame.
So what's your ideal bodyweight then? 190? And how much of an ectomorph are you? Do you literally eat as much as you can and not gain a lb of muscle? current and ideal bf %? Its hard to tell without more specifics, but for your average guy looking to be 185-190 I'd say take in ~4000 cals a day, as much of it from clean foods (whole grains, lean meat, good fats) as possible. But if you're absolutely stuffed then dont sweat eating some pizza or a burger to hit that many cals. you NEED to create a massive caloric surplus to grow that much, and the cleaner those calories are the less fat you'll pack on with your muscle.

I spoke to a doctor a few weeks ago about my recent weight loss of 5kg (11 lbs) and the general history of the difficulty to put on weight. He checked for tapeworm and for thyroid problems and found nothing. His advice was just to go on holiday and relax.

When I was a teenager, I used to get called "hollow legs" because they were long and because I never put on weight no matter how much I ate. I call myself the classic ectomorph because of this and because I have long and thin legs, trunk and arms. My arms are probably typical of a 16 year old.

I would settle for a weight of 185 - 190 lbs. I'd still be slim but not skinny.

My Body Mass Index (BMI = BMI is determined by your weight in kg divided by your (height in metres)Č) is 20. The acceptable range is 20 to 25 so I can afford to put on some weight.

Part of the problem is that I don't have the greatest of appetites.

Sol, standard problem. Squat rack will sort out the appetite. The book referenced in this article wouldn't be a bad place to start, nor would "westside for skinny bastards." (google)

Listen IŽll probably get warned or something for mentioning this web site but, I was really skinny too and I found this web site How to gain weight and build muscle mass fast!, where they have a program formulated specialy for guys like us. I gained 17 pounds in less than 3 months of pure muscle following their manual. But let me give you a free tip, you have to eat a lot if you are skinny. Eat lots of grilled meat, nothing fried...take protein right after each work out, and eat 6 times a day until you are about to explode plue hit the gym 3 days each week and do heavy sets of 8. once you can do 10 you put more weight and keep going.

Good luck
