Default frequency of cardio in routine

Okay so I usually go to the gym 4 times per week and start on cardio and then go onto resistance.

I have been told that with resistance you get better results by alternating and not exercising muscle groups every day and am seeing the results but wondering if this is the same with cardio...

For example - I've been doing this for a year and lost a lot of weight however from an overall fitness level I don't see much in the way of improvement certainly in the last 6 months. I would like to be able to run for longer etc but I always seem to be able to last about the same amount of time and wonder if I'm overdoing it and should do longer cardio sessions but less regularly??

Probably not longer, but harder cardio sessions.

If you want to get fitter you need to slowly increase the resistance level of the exercise. For example, as you run 4 times a week, increase the speed of the tredmill a bit each time u run whilst running for the same set time. Alternatively, you could run at the same speed-setting but increase the period you run for by a minute each time. This is the basic principle for improving fittness. It is all about improving on your prior performance.
