Default Help me quit smoking

I decided a few months ago that I really want to quit. I started on the patch and was doing great until step 3. (7mg of nicotine) The cravings are too much for me at that point. I went back to step 2 and am fine but do not want to be on the patch forever either.

I'm looking for advise from people who have quit successfully.
Thanks.

I tried cold turkey and failed...
How long were you smoking for and what did you do to fight off the cravings?

It's true...quitting smoking is mental. I've been smoking on and off since the 3rd grade. Currently I'm at a pack-a-day. I want to quit as well, but at the same time, I enjoy it enough to not have enough mental willpower to quit.

I did quit for some time with the Allen Carr method. I saw the book in the bookstore but dismissed it right away. I said to myself, "Anyone who says quitting smoking is easy has never smoked before in their life!" But then I read that Anthony Hopkins quit smoking with this technique. The book is called "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking." It really worked. Also, check the reviews on amazon.com - it's 4.5 stars. His attempt is to re-brainwash you into quitting smoking so it's easy and painless. He even encourages you to continue smoking while reading the book. Once you get rid of the nicotine addiction, the biggest obstacle is the mental game and this is where the book really helps. No patch, gum, or candy. They don't work. I've tried it to no avail. But this book has promise. Carr says that you aren't quitting smoking (which has a negative connotation implying sacrifice). Instead, you are freeing yourself.

You can do it. We need to reprogram our minds and mentality to approach women; and in the same must be do it to quit smoking. I'm confident Allen Carr can help you with that.

I am the same exact way.
I mean I definitely hate it when my friends are playing basketball and I cant last past 5 minutes with them before I get dizzy from the lack of oxygen.
But of course after a hard class or somthing a cigerette feels so good heh.
Also I have no idea how to drink with out smoking at the same time.

I am working on getting the will power to quit but it just keeps going away so damn fast that I cant actually do it.

Over winter break when I went back home, I stopped smoking for 3 weeks cold turkey(I know it is easier for someone who has only smoked for about a year like myself) but once I got back to the college, I could not resist the temptation.

I think you have to get to the point where you really dont want to smoke in order to quit. At this point like everyone said it's all mental. You will have physical urges to smoke but you need to be mentally strong to overcome these urges.

Maybe I will end up quitting with you =)

Seriously, You do not really want to give up. If you enjoy it sooooo much, why would you give up? It is really a contradiction in terms, it seems you only like the idea of giving up, rather than the want to give up.

I used to be a chain smoker back at university, however i did not give up, i just stopped smoking for a while.

This menatality has helped me to not smoke.. quite frankly i can not see the point of it anymore, and i can guarantee you that after you have stopped smoking for a month, having a drag is absolutely disgusting.

If you can not drink without a smoke... stop drinking. This is the what you have to do to become succesful. If you really want to stop smoking, you will make sacrifices for it... this is the mental aptitude you require. It is suprisingly simple.. as i said, after a month, they tatse horrible, so you can actually start drinking again.

Of course, just like anything, if you make it a huge deal to quit smoking, you are making it a big deal...

For me it was not a big deal, just something i fancied doing. I was not quiting, so it was really not that big a deal if i had a little hiccup or two along the way (Rome was not built in a day!), and it got the point where isjust don't bother anymore. After all, if you have no fags in your pocket, it is not exactly a massive problem to say 'NO' when someone offers you one.

I
This is a true story. I completely agree with you. But the hardest part is getting to the one month point.

The nicotine addition and withdrawal lasts about 2 weeks after quitting. From there, it's a mental game.

My friend told me how he quit smoking (cold turkey) by completely changing his lifestyle. He started working out and eating right. When you get into a new lifestyle habit, you don't want to fuck up your achievements by smoking.

Another friend quit smoking with 3 or his close friends. They all made a pact saying that the first one to smoke would have to buy the entire group an expensive steak dinner. The second person to smoke would have to do the same. Etc etc etc. They constantly kept each other accountable. Also, because they're all close friends, they had integrity with each other (since it was pretty much an honors system).

The hardest thing to do is try to quit smoking alone. Many of my friends smoke and have no intentions of quitting. I wish I had a support system like that.

Well, this is my point of view:
If you want to quit smoking, you have to admit to yourself that smoking is childish and immature. Because, if you are a real man, you can quit easier.
Of course it's easy to say "I what to quit", but it's hard to do it. For me, i think this happens for one reason only: habits. Smoking is part of your life, and you have to reprogram your self and your hole life, and that is a huge step.
Remember that to smoke brings absolutely nothing good, and to successfully quit brings you a lot of great things to your life (specially high rating HB's).
Also, make sure you have something to distract yourself when you want to smoke: read, listen to music, make something with your hands (this last one is very important).
And just remember (as a friend of mine used to say to me): it's only hard to smoke THE NEXT one!

I hope you win that battle...
