Well...back when I was in collegue I used to kinda downplay myself being an engineer. saying things like "yeah Im an engineer, so yeah ppl always tell me "oh god...Im so sorry "(referring to having to study so much)...and it was probably one of the worst things you could ever do.
Now Ive found out that is an automatic DHV (means wealth + smarts), but beware, it can also come of as arrogant and boring. The key is how to present it and move on.
Normally I always go by default with the two responses:
HB: What do you do?
NL: well, I work as a full time disposable lighter repairman (or any other funny job)
HB: no, seriously what you do?
NL: Electrical engineer
and move on.....unless they are interested in knowing about what you do or how you do it, like what does that do or what does that entail, you dont need to talk about it further. If you do get asked, you can just say: "well, I love my job because of ____ and _______ (fill blanks with social/exciting aspects of the job)", but dont go too far into it unless it sparks interest...and then if they want to get into it further you can dwell in.
Another default response:
HB: So what do you do
NL: Well, you know how you are alone in the dark, scared and then flip a switch and a light comes on? Im the guy that makes that happen (credits to somebody here in the forum"
HB: (laughs) how so?
NL: Im an electrical engineer (field tested once, got some results...will do more field tests)
My point is you can play engineering as a fun thing in the sense that is already common knowledge that engineers will have money. It is commonly perceived that engineers are guys that are in their office, not sociable blah blah blah, but they get lots of money. Not so common knowledge that engineers have to travel a shit load (like 30% of the ppl know that)...and even less that it can bring some excitement or something fun, or that there is actually a social aspect to it (ok, is not freaking
PR but still...). Like I said, dont focus on what you could do with engineering, focus on the more social aspect of it (even if it means making the world a better place....that during comfort is an awesome thing to do)
