Math Question/Number Close Not sure if this is the right place to post this or not but I had to share with you a time tested number close that I use.
This number close should be a very elaborate production. In a group or separately doesn't matter. The only two things you will need is a bar napkin/piece of paper and a pen. This should be drawn out as long as possible and you should give them a very detailed explanation of the math problem you are about to explain.
I usually start off by asking them if they are any good at math. Most will say that they are. If they say no then just ask them what the highest level of math they took and then inform them that whatever math level they just named will be sufficient.
Math problem goes like so:
Draw a dot or something indicating a train on the far left side of the napkin. Tell them that this is a train in Los Angeles that is traveling east at 55 miles per hour. Feel free to elaborate this as much as possible, describing the train, colors, type of engine, number of passengers, whatever, make it a good story and keep them interested. Draw an arrow off of this dot going to the right of the napkin or piece of paper.
Then draw a dot on the far right of the napkin. Tell them that this a train heading west from Boston at 75 miles per hour. Once again describing everything about this train that you can possibly think of. Draw an arrow coming off of this dot to the left of the napkin.
You should by this time really have grabbed their attention. The wheels should be turning as if they are getting ready to figure out some big math problem.
This is when you say: "How long will it take... (long pause for effect) for you to write down your number?"
As you are saying this pass the pen to the girl.
