Arrow DHV - Magic

Alrighty, since I've been dumping some of my personal methods lately, I though I'd add Magic. Since no one [that I know of] has actually talked about PERFORMING the tricks, but rather "It's a good way to DHV. You should learn it!". Simply knowing that these tricks are a simple illusion makes them alot easier to do than thinking that 'it takes forever to get right'.
Before you perform any of this, if you laugh and joke while doing the magic [unless intentionally like 'whoa! how'd that happen?!'] then it'll ruin the trick. Act serious and like the magic your doing is REAL.
So here's a few of my favorite tricks:
The Old Handkerchief and Coin Trick:
Effect: The performer puts a coin into a handkerchief, flips the hanky over, and the coin is magically gone.
How to Do it: This one is Simple, but fun. Simply sneak a rubber band onto your thumb and forefinger. Now put the hanky in the hand. Then let the rubber band slip off your thumb onto the hanky, holding the coin in place. Then shake the hanky [but not too hard] and it will appear to have dissappeared!
The Hopping Coin:
Effect: The performer places a coin in the palm of your hand, and holding both hands out, the spectator/audience always guesses wrong.
How you Do it: Simply flick your wrist inward when the helper guesses, tossing the coin into your other hand. Once perfected, this works well and is very entertaining. *this should be as subtle as possible as your audience is near you.*
Vanishing Coin:
Effect: A coin is placed on a table and it vanishes!
How you Do it: Place the coin on a table with your left hand and you say something like "hey, look at this". The person you talked to looks over and with your right hand you place your index, middle, and third finger on the coin. Now slide the coin off using your fingers as a visual barrier. *you want your hand and arm parallel to the table* Then touch your thumb to your middle finger as if you are picking up the coin as it reaches the end of the table. Then move your hand to around 6 inches from where your hand originally was. Then with your thumb and middle finger still together, rub your thumb to your middle finger as if the coin is dissappearing. Then flip your hand over and spread your fingers. This is a trick to look surprised for. *This trick makes a killer opener*
The French Drop:
Effect: You throw the coin at a member of the audience, but wait, the coin has dissappeared!
How you Do it: Using the same method as the Vanishing coin trick, pull the coin off the table without anyone seeing it. Then Act as if your picking up the coin, then 'throw' it at someone. Then stare at your hand in surprise!
*For the last two tricks it is best to have them directly in front of you, or at least where no one is behind you or can see your lap*
The best for last!
You know how in Style's book "The Game" Mystery says that he has a cool trick where he can stop his pulse for three seconds? Here it is.

The Heart Stopper:
Effect: A member, feeling your pulse at your wrist, notices that your pulse slows, then completely stops!!!
How you Do it: Tie a bandanna or a small cloth in a loop, with a knot in the loop. Pull the bandanna loop up your arm inside of your shirt, to where the knot is in your armpit. This may take practice as the size of the knot needed and the exact position varies from person to person. Now that your bandanna is on and ready, have a member of the audience feel your pulse on the arm with the bandanna. Now while the member is feeling it, roll your eyes skyward and stealthily push your arm up against the side of your torso, pressing the knot deeper into your armpit, which will slow and eventually stop your pulse. So press your arm tighter and tighter until your pulse stops completely, and you should at this point be looking very sick. Count to three, and release the tension on your arm, and heave a sigh of relief and turn back to normal.
Special Note: A good idea would be to go to the bathroom and put on the bandanna rather than having the thing on all night, and for an amplified effect put a bandanna on both arms and use two audience members.
That's it.
Questions/Comments?
Oh and I have alot of other magic, but I'm not going to share it unless you guys actually show some interest

Default Coin Warp Trick

Good one this, tried once or twice and had a good reaction. Coins are best, if you perform a card trick you obviously need cards. Every girl worth sarging will say " So you like walk around with a deck in your pocket..ugh!" Coins are very under the radar. Anyway the trick...
You need 5 coins, 4 the same size and 1 bigger for the finale. Have one of the small ones on you and the bigger one.
Set up
1 - Conceal your small coin in your right hand and have the big one in your pocket.
2 - Ask the set for 3 coins, make sure they are all the same and match the one hidden in your palm. Put them on the table.
3 - Pick up one and drop in your empty hand, wrap your fingers around it quick. The hand that drops the coin is the one with another hidden in it remember.
4 - Pick up the second and drop this one AND the hidden one into your palm and close quickly again.
5 - Pick up the last on the table and put it in your pocket. Really you curl it into your palm again and hide it while in your pocket.
Check - At this point you have 3 coins in your left and 1 hidden in your right. The audience will believe you have 2 in the left because you physically picked up 2. Remeber you dropped your hidden 1 in making 3. Now say something like " Did you see that? The coin in my pocket just travelled into my left hand, no really look " Now reveal the 3 coins and grin.
Drop the 3 coins on the table again and repeat again in the same way but,
*Important* This time when you put the small coin in your pocket switch it for the bigger one.
Finale
Do you have 3 coins on the table, big coin in the hand and a amazed audience? Good
1 - Pick up one coin and go to drop in in your palm but drop the BIGGER one and quickly hide the small one in your palm while closing your left hand tight rapid style. People may see something but they are expecting a coin.
2 - Pick up the final 2 on the table and drop them into your pocket along with the hidden one and yay your clean Now is there 4 little coins in your pocket and a bigger coin in your hand? If not you will look stupid.
3 - Ask set how many in your hand? They will say 1, but they are not expecting a different coin.
4 - Accept the impending Kudos with glee, give yourself a mental pat on the back. Well done old bean
During this you should be talking all the time and be standing in a way that makes it difficult to spot any hidden coins or see the coin drop.
Enjoy.

Alot of magic takes confederates, which is a member of the crowd who works WITH you to complete magic tricks that seem impossible. A confederate can easily be your wing, and being a confederate is damn easy. Here's an interesting trick that involves the use of a confederate:
The Watch, the Wallet, and the Ring:
Effect:A person places a watch, a ring, and a wallet into three different pockets while the magician's back is turned, and then the magician turns around and magically knows what object is in which pocket.
How You Do It:Using a watch, ring, and wallet from the audience, hand the items to a member and tell them to put each object in a different pocket while your back is turned. Proceed to turn around, and wait until he or she says "Alright, I'm done" or something like that. Turn around, and look for your confederate. Your confederate's role in this trick is to watch which pockets contain which items, and to give you a covert signal to tell you which pocket has what. For example, if he puts the watch in his front left pocket, lets say that your confederate scratches his head. Just remember to pan the audience and make subtle gestures or they might discover the truth.
And the watch-stopper trick requires a special watch, and your confederate.

This trick you can use it to guess 3-digit numbers or initials or anything you can add...
David Blain's Voodoo Spirit Writing

An entertaining routine where the audience are impressed with your mind reading skills
Effect : The magician is seen to write something down on a paper note pad and does not allow the spectator to see what he has written. The magican announces that he is about to ask the spectator a question and because he can read his mind, already knows the answer that the spectator will reply back with. The spectator is then asked to think of a number between one and a hundred or a simple shape such as a triangle, square or rectangle and reveal this out loud. The note pad is then shown to find that the magician had written the same number or shape down on the note pad!
Method : Make a gimmick by taping a small piece of broken pencil lead to your thumb, ( Use clear adhesive tape such as Sellotape so that the spectator and audience will not see it and remember to keep the sticky side facing out ). Initially write nothing on the note pad, ( only appear to be writing something ) and when you hide the face of the note pad from the spectator, do so with your thumb facing the side of the paper that you had supposedly written something on ( See picture 3). When your victim says the number or shape that they have thought of, simply write it on the note pad with your thumb and then show it to them as your prediction.
This trick is really convincing but depends a great deal on the magicians performance. Try your hand at acting, look as if you are really concentrating and that the trick requires real mental effort on your part. This will reinforce the illusion that you really can read minds.

Magic is an ART. ART is expression. Expression is freedom. Freedom is to live.
Practice it...but not to impress,to entertain...one magic trick is a DHV,but it depends on the trick. With many tricks you can scare or freak people out.So...dont try any trick such as twisting arm illusion to a woman...she gonna run away!

Arrow Learning to Amaze - Magic

Ok, so since my magic thread got a pretty good amount of attention and discussion [and since I have some free time on my hands], I'm going to start a thread on simply amazing people using magic.

So first, we're going to look into what magic is, and what it can do for you.

Magic:
mag·ic
noun 1. the art of producing illusions as entertainment by the use of sleight of hand, deceptive devices, etc

All of the magic I'll be discussing will be illusions. Some will be so convincing that people will actually think you have supernatural powers. If, for some odd reason you can do REAL magic, then why the hell are you reading this post? Magic will cover things that are very impromptu and easy, to complex with alot of setup. It all just comes down to personal preference. Personally, I like to do tricks that are the strongest and the most impromptu, because I generally don't have the time or patience to set up a long trick. I also generally stay away from angle-sensitive magic, because prying eyes could easily kill a sarge if someone decides to AMOG your ass in a public area.

Anyway,
How can magic be used?

Magic can be used almost anywhere, at any point of the sarge. For instance, one could casually do a trick to a wing with a HB watching. Later, when you sarge her, you would already have DHV and rapport created. Another situation would be to ask a HB to come in your house so you can show her a trick . The beauty of magic is in its versatility and value.

Is magic easy?

Yes and no. Generally, with practice, a person could learn a trick in a single night, but there are harder tricks and flourishes that require practice and patience to master.

A couple of good traits to have / attain:

- Acting abilities. If you can sell a trick with your gestures and facial expressions, then the effect will be MUCH more effective. You need to seem as if you can really do magic.

- Coordination. I cannot stress enough that you have to be smooth and fluid with your hands to realize a trick's full potential. Practice, practice, practice.

- Patience. VERY rarely will you get a trick on your first try. If the cards fly everywhere and your trick messes up, don't sweat it. You need to have the patience to see a trick through until you master it.

Now, most of the most amazing tricks are some of the simplest. I will post pictures of the tricks in progress [the tricks can sometimes be very hard to follow with just text], in step by step photos. But first, let me type out a few tricks to start us off.

The Coin through Can Trick:
A very popular trick, with no setup at all. When done right, this trick will drop jaws. Best done outside.

- Effect: The magician takes a coin with the subjects initials on each side, and slams it inside of a sealed can of soda or beer. The can is then inspected to be clean, then the magician pours out the liquid inside of the can, and the signed coin is inside.

- What you need: A quarter, or coin of about the same dimensions, and a sealed can. You may also want a sharpie if you want to add in the signed effect.

- The Trick: This trick is going to seem complex, but once pictures are up it is quite simple.

Alright, so you have a can in one hand and a quarter in the other. The coin can be signed ahead of time to add authenticity to the trick.

The coin should be in the middle of the right palm [or left, depending on preference], and the can should be in the other hand, with the butt of the can facing the hand with the quarter.

Then you speak of a weak spot in the bottom of the can, where a quarter could penetrate to the inside without ever breaking the can. Then, with the can tilted slightly upward, you slam the coin into the back of the can. The coin should rest, balancing, on the lip of the can.

But of course your audience doesn't know that. With the coin balanced on the lip of the butt of the can, you show your other hand, while passing the can from one hand to the other. When you open your other hand [the one that originally had the can], you're going to lightly jerk the can, throwing the coin from the lip of the can back into your palm. Then, you rotate the can so that the mouth is facing up, and you grasp the can, trapping the coin in between your hand and the coin itself. With your other hand [the one not gripping the can], you take the can, while pulling the quarter to the back of the can and holding it up against the side with your thumb. Then, with hands open, you rotate the can, keeping the quarter pressed against the can and out of site. While rotating, the coin should never move.

Then, you take the can with the quarter pressed up against the back and rotate it fully, so that the bottom is now up in the air. Rotate it some more, and explain that the butt has no holes or slits. Spin it some more, and reverse the rotation so that the top is now once again on top. Rotate the can while explaining that the top is still sealed, and stop rotating with the mouth FACING YOU. This is very important, because it will make opening the can easier.

Next, you're going to explain how you can sometimes hear the coin. With both hands, you're going to slip the coin quickly on top of the sealed mouth of the can. If it makes any clinking noise while going up, you can explain that you "just heard it". While LIGHTLY holding the coin with both thumbs on top of the mouth, shake the can next to your ear. Your grip should be light enough for the coin to move here and there and make a light clinking noise. That clinking, mixed with the liquid churning, should make the coin sound like it's actually inside of the can.

Now comes the easy part. You simply step back from the audience, and say that you're going to open it, and that you're stepping back because it might spray since you've shaken it. While moving back, you're going to slide the coin from on top of the mouth to on top of the tab. Then, open the can with the coin pressed against the tab. When open, let the coin slide in, and push the tab back down. The fizz should cover up anything if you should fumble. Then, pour out the can onto grass or into a sink, and shake the can. If the desire, you can rip open the can and return to them the signed coin. Ask them to keep the coin as a souvenir, and enjoy the reactions.

Now, this trick is of medium practice and of medium skill. I got this trick down in around an hour and a half of practicing. Just remember to keep the can at an angle to where to coin won't fall off of the lip, or where the audience can't see the resting coin.

Step - by - step pics will be up later tonight, and I'll do each trick in chapters.

I encourage everyone with something to contribute or questions to ask to please ask them. Magic is frustrating enough without having unanswered questions. If you have more tricks and material or suggestions, PLEASE STATE THEM. Many minds are better than one.

Let's learn to amaze.

-Rip

Smile Pictures!

Alright! I've got some pictures for ya'. If you need more, don't hesitate to ask, but I'm trying to do it as quickly, cleanly, and simply as possible.

Ok, so the first picture is just how the coin should start off in your hand.

The second is how the coin should rest on the lip.

The third is how you should hold the can while showing your other hand to be empty. With that grip, you should smoothly jerk the coin off the lip into your hand.

The fourth is how the coin will end up between your hand and the can. Obviously, your hand will wrap around the can, but my hand's open just for placement.

The fifth is how your thumb should grip the coin against the can. Notice how the thumb covers the front, not the middle or back. You're going to rotate the can with the same grip used to jerk it, but vertical.

The sixth is the coin against the can in mid rotation. As you can see, the coin does NOT move, and remains out of sight. The can should be the only thing moving. Once again, rotate with the same grip.

The eigth is how your hand should hold the coin against the mouth. Couple of things to notice here:
1) The coin should be held with BOTH hands, but obviously I have to hold the camera.
2) The coin should be held next to your ear while shaking to keep the coin concealed.

The last picture is how the coin should rest on top of the tab. Note how you can still open the can with the coin resting as it is. The coin then should slide off the tab and into the can when opening it.

Then, just pour and shake. Shabam.

Questions?

-Rip

Edit: I plan on adding one trick each day or so, until this post is enough for a full routine.

Hey, Rip.

I've done this trick a few times for friends (Havn't done it in about a month, though) and always have the same problem. After I slam the coin into the bottom of the can and show my hands empty, everyone is completly quiet, or I'm not getting a big reaction. The problem with this is when I let the coin fall into my hand from the bottom, it always makes a *clink* noise. I've gotten away with it most of the time, but two times people have went "Oh, I just heard it", but I keep going. One person said they heard it and I kept going, because they didn't really realise where the sound came from.

Just wondering if you know any ways to cover the sound. Do you have this problem? I've only done it in quiet enviroments, too, which is a pretty big reason, I guess.

I've had this problem. It's a pain in the ass, but not impossible to overcome.

What you need to do is to jerk it from the lip, and not let it just fall off, making noise. You need to keep the can straight; don't rotate it at all when you jerk it. Jerk it fast, and vertically. It should almost literally fall from the lip.

Just to put it simply, quickly turn it vertically, don't jerk it horizontally.

If you keep getting the problem, though, you could just fake up a cough when you do it, or just talk about the trick while you jerk.

Yea, I know to jerk it, but it still makes noise. Especially when you bring the can into your palm. The coin hits the can sometimes and you get a clink there, as well.

Coughing would look too supicious if you ask me. I bring my hand up when I cough. I don't like to cough in open air. Its gross =P.

I'll probably just talk louder from now on. You're supposed to do the jerk motion while showing your other hand empty, anyway. (I don't know if you covered that in your post about it, I just knew what the trick was and decided to ask.) Say "Some people think I throw it to my other hand... but look...(Jerk can) Its empty, too." Good misdirection.

Heres a video of me performing sinful when I first learned it. Due to a lack of cans in my house, I do not have any to perform a fresh video. I figured something is better then nothing, especially because the trick is hard to show through pictures.

Some notes I would like to point out before you watch the video (Things you shouldn't do that I do):
--I watch my hands too much. Do not do this when you preform. Spectators look where you look. You look at them, they look back at you.

--I did not pull up my sleeves. This creates suspicion that the coin is in my sleeves.

--I turned the can too many times to show that it has not been penetrated. One smooth turn usually does the trick. When showing the bottom, tap it and rub your finger around the inside of the rim to show it isn't a gimmicked can. (A gimmick is a pre-prepared item used in magic. Such as invisible thread, or cards that have a special print on them. Also called gaffs.)

--I was jittery and did not speak loudly or clearly.

I am no longer that bad when I preform. I may replace the link here later with a fresh performance, but thats an iffy.

Sinful preformed by Intrepid
