| | | Here's a nifty little trick I adapted from Justin Miller.
Have her pick a card and hide it from you. You give her the deck and say that you're not allowed touch the cards for the rest of the trick. Take out a notebook and explain, "I knew we would meet today, so I wrote some predictions down in here. Let's see how accurate they are. What color is your car?"
She answers, just smirk and say, "Amazing." You open the notebook to show the first page with the message 'I KNEW THAT!' scrawled across it.
"Alright, second question. What is your mother's maiden name?"
She answers, and the smirk becomes a grin. "Unbelievable." You flip to the next page, which has the same scrawled writing that reads 'I KNEW THAT, TOO!!'
By now, most people are laughing their asses off.
"Final prediction." Lift up the page to show the value and suit of her card scrawled on the page. "This was your card."
I was doing variations on this all day yesterday. One variation was to write down the card on the spot, fold the paper once, tear it out, fold it again, and ask her to hand you the cards while you handed her the paper. To build tension, I told her to wait while I put away my notebook, cards, and pen in my messenger bag. Then I would tell her she could open it. One girl got so freaked out, she crumpled the paper up into a ball and threw it at me while laughing and shouting, "Damn you!" |

For the record I use to use magic in almost every set. I dont do it at all anymore because most of it relies on gimmicks that you cant sustain why you have it (pen through a dollar is a great illusion and it understandable why you have a pen). I still do magic at my house in comfort but only like 4 or 5 illusions and it is congruent with my identity because I am very sprititual.

You can find the book at most libraries, but if you want to go to a local magic shop or any online dealer, you can pick it up for about ten or eleven bucks. Good deal. Quote:

| | | "As for the nail writer can I just chop of the end of my pencil and tac it" yes you can or you can use selotape but it is very unstable compared to the model i bought. Dont worry it is very good.
"trying to give the impression that you have written their initials down before you asked the person on a piece of paper."
Did you check out the pictures?
1.take out your paper
2. ask her to think of her initials
3. and you pretend WITH THE PENCIL that you have written it down (but you havent)
4. then you ask what was your initials, and then you say ok ill show you in a second
5. then you say something to distract her "whats the probablity i could have gotten this right" NOW YOU WRITE DOWN HER INITIALS

| | | If anyone plans on using a nail writer, I highly recommend you throw down $30 for the book "13 Steps to Mentalism" by Corinda. It has a shit ton of great psychology and routines, and the first chapter is dedicated entirely to using a nailwriter. He also goes into great detail about the different types of nail writers you can use.
A variation on the nail writer comes with Ellusionist's Scorpion Pro UV Kit (a kit which I just fucking adore). It's a UV ink-based nail writer, which makes for some spooky effects, but I haven't gotten used to it enough to make it performance ready. It's kind of a knacky move to get it loaded into position.
On the Scorpion DVD, Justin Miller shows a demonstration of it by borrowing this kid's 20. He hands him a sharpie and tell him to sign the date in the margin. He then holds the 20 and looks at it a moment.
"What's your first and last name?
"Luke Cabrera."
"How do you spell that?"
"Cabrera?"
"No, Luke."
Hands the kid his 20 back after a laugh and tells him to put in his pocket. At the end of the routine, Luke pulls his twenty back out and when Justin shines the UV light on it, the initials LC appear on the bill in glowing ink. |

| | | Whoa... last time I checked this thread was at like... 22 replies? Now it's at 115. Good God!
On the note of props and other materials, it's much easier [and cheaper!] to just master sleights involving simple items; for instance the Cigarette Restoration trick.
Any requests on the next tricks to be put up?
I'm also debating on adding card flourishes, but that's only if the desire is there.
But for the time being: The Basic Pass
One of the most fundamental sleights of magic, the pass controls a card from the middle of the deck to the top. Method: This is going to be a bit hard to explain in type, but I'll try my best. I suggest you google or youtube it if you need visual assistance. To say it simply, once a target puts their card back in the deck, you're going to insert your pinky on TOP of the card, creating a break. Remember to add pressure with your hand to make the break less noticeable.
Alright, so the setup should look something like this:
---Top Half of Deck---
---Pinky--------------
---Selected Card------
---Bottom Half of Deck-
So, once you've got your hand and deck set up you're going to want to balance the top half of the deck with your pinky on one side and your other three fingers on the other. Then you're going to lean the packet half off of the deck and pick up the bottom packet, with the "hinge" of the bottom packet being against your thumb, just below the middle knuckle. Then once the packet is balanced [while the other packet is still balanced. It'll look something like this \ / ] you're going to want to put the originally top packet back into your hand and place to originally bottom packet on top of the other. I know, this sounds very confusing, but it's quite simple to learn once you get the idea.
Here's another overview:
1) Get the card you desire under your pinky.
2) Lean the top packet off the bottom, balancing between your pinky and your other fingers.
3) Pivot the bottom packet on your thumb, making space for the top packet to become the new bottom packet.
4) Replace the top packet as the new bottom packet.
5) Pivot the remaining packet back down onto the deck, thus placing the card on top of the deck.
This will be difficult and slow at first, but after awhile it will be very fast and easy; to the point where it'll be undetectable. A good way to think of this is a sideways charlier cut.
I'll try to throw some picutres up if I can find the damn cable.

| | | Yeah... no matter what, you'll still have to buy gimmicks.
I remember buying my 110$ gimmicked orange tree sketch book.
It resembled a normal sketchbook [around 2 feet long or less, I suppose] and it was filled with random sketches. Then there was a random drawing of an orange tree. Anddd I remember making oranges come out of the book and showing a orange-less tree to gaping spectators to the first time. It just showed me that no matter how creative you are, you can always depends on hard cash to get you a great effect.
Anyone hear reviews about the Devil's Nail trick?
It's the trick where the magician puts a nail under one of four cups, and has the spectators mix the cups order while the magicians back is turned. Then, the magician proceeds to slam his hand down onto the paper/styrofoam cups until the only cup remaining is the one with the nail.
I know that this can be done with confederates, but I believe the trick involves a gimmick or it wouldn't be so expensive
---Edit---
My review on the m5 system: First Thoughts: Man, this'll be cool. I'll make coins flip and tvs freak out! Second thoughts, after it arrived: Damn, that's a big brick. How in hell am I going to conceal it?! Oh well, there's probably a big coat around here somewhere. Also, the wristband doesn't hold the brick too well. Ah, well. Maybe the tricks will make up for it. Final Thoughts: Eh, the tricks were decent, but the steel cored coins didn't feel like normal coins do. The brick is so strong that if moved near enough to a metal surface it will almost pull itself out of the wristband to get to the metal. At very best, it'll yank your wrist to the metal, and the magnet will make a loud THUNK when it connects. It's also helluh hard to get off the metal once it's there. Worth the money if you wear jackets often and don't mind a 3 pound brick on your wrist.
