Hi guys,
I'm not sure if this is the right thread to put this in (I can't find a section on "Storytelling", and searches on stories indicate they're mostly going to the Attraction or Discussion sections). Anyway, I'm putting together my first story, using the guidelines from "
Magic Bullets". This is a true experience I had close to 3 years ago (although I've buttered up areas such as my girlfriend's involvement, and of course I won't mention how long ago this was). This is my first crack at it, and parts of it sound a little silly, but I would appreciate your input and recommendations on how to make it better.
Thanks a bunch guys,
Visor
"Have you ever been on stage on a cruise? I was on a cruise ship a little while ago, and decided I was brave enough to sign up for a show called “Carnival Legends”, which was one of those productions where the audience gets dress up in costume and sing as a pop or rock star. There were some pretty interesting characters to play; Elton John, James Brown, Aretha Franklin… I was assigned the
wonderful role of Ricky Martin. I had 2 days to memorize the lyrics to “Livin’ La Vida Loca”, which turned out to be no easy feat. What started off as a relaxing, fun cruise, turned into a stressful challenge as I tried to make the words of the song stick in my head. I practiced everywhere, outside on my cabin balcony, in the dining room, ironing my clothes, everywhere. I thought I was making progress, but then when we had our dress rehearsal the day before, I completely botched it and I felt so embarrassed. I felt like I was never going to learn that song. My girlfriend, as well as my friends from the cruise, saw my potential and really wanted to be there for me. As a surprise, my girlfriend invited all my friends over to our cabin to watch me rehearse the number and help along with the lyrics. They were absolutely awesome, and with all their help I felt a lot more prepared for the show. Of course, the night of the show I was still incredibly nervous. I hadn’t performed on stage since I was a kid, and this time I was performing in front of 300 people. I remember sitting back stage, waiting for my call, feeling sick to the stomach and probably looking white as a ghost. When the call finally came, I took a deep breath, briskly walked out on stage, and nailed the song! What a rush! I had a great time on stage, singing to the audience and enjoying the dancing girls who flocked around me. All my friends threw a party for me afterwards, and my girlfriend thought I was some kind of hero. The entire show was videotaped, and my girlfriend took pictures [I’d have a couple of these in my picture routine]. It was the most exhilarating moment in my life, and started what was to become my part-time career in singing and acting."
