    Jazz Bar in LA?

    Hey Guys,
I just moved to LA and I'm looking for a good Jazz bar, somewhere in or around Hollywood. Basically just to chill and maybe strike up a few conversations. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
    The Scarlet Pimp.

There's a bunch of jazz festivals... they just did one in Oceanside, Playboy at the Hollywood Bowl every year, Santa Barbara, one in Orange County I've heard about but never went to and the big one over on Catalina Island. Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood I've heard of but haven't been. Croce's and Humphreys (which has the backstage lounge with a mix of music and the jazz brunch) in San Diego are the known ones. Both are pretty good.
See if you can find a copy of "Smooth Jazz Magazine" in the music store or online. The Wave 94.7 should have announcements and some things on their site. There's always the official sites of the different known performers if you're familiar with Boney James, Mindi Abair, Dave Benoit, etc.
My opinion is that the jazz clubs in SoCal are not like the east coast.. and a lot of jazz musicians are frustrated with how it is here. In NY or Chicago it's not a problem... Wineries get a lot of jazz shows... so do the casinos. The universities will have jazz concerts by known names. It's here but it's definitely a lot of searching on your part.

Cool man, Thanks for the considered response. I'll have to follow up on some of those leads. I'm living in and around the Hollywood area, so I might check out The Catalina Bar and Grill as it is just round the corner from where I work. I'll let you know what it's like. Much appricated.

they use to have a free blues mag at tower records it had a lot of blues clubs but most of those were jazz clubs too or they had a jazz night. I hate the Wave(too soft). I love (kjazz) jazzandblues.org 88.1fm they play miles, coltrane, duke, bird, shatchmo, lady day, and anything good.

Long Beach Jazz Festival is this weekend, not too far from where the Queen Mary and that touristy shopping center is. Goes all day until 10-ish...
Wineries always have some sort of live jazz shows in the summertime, Santa Barbara is not too far of a drive from you.
Also the 4 day jazz cruises to Mexico I saw listed.
Earth Wind and Fire and Chris Botti in Irvine on the 18th.

    Hey cool,
Thanks for the feedback and the heads up, might have to check those gigs out. Long Beach sounds like it could be a plan, do you need to get tickets or do you just rock up? sdnightfly you planning to go?
    Thanks again

hey, I am from LA and I'm really into jazz, however I do not live there any more. Catalina Bar and Grill gets the best names hands down. Jazz Bakery in Culver City is also good too. For the best listings, pick up the Thursday LA Times, calendar section or try LA Weekly (comes out in various shops every Thurs)
